AlphaS: A new portable radon monitor with high sensitivity

19th February 2026

At a glance

> The AlphaS is the newest radon monitor from Bertin Instruments, adding to its existing range of radon monitors.

> Wireless connectivity and a built-in web server interface enable easy remote monitoring, with optional accessories for measuring radon in water and soil.

> It is ideal for workplaces, residences, and water facilities where radon risks exist, helping users meet relevant safety requirements.

Advanced pulse ionisation chamber technology

With a sensitive 0.2 L ionisation chamber, the AlphaS provides a portable solution for monitoring radon in both diffusion and flow modes, allowing for radon “sniffing”. It is an ideal instrument for short-term spot measurements and long-term radon assessments both indoors and outdoors.

Remote management and monitoring

With integrated wireless connectivity and a built-in web server interface, the AlphaS can be easily connected to computers, tablets and smartphones, allowing it to be remotely managed and monitored easily. Optional accessories allow the instrument to directly determine radon concentrations in water and measure radon in soil.

Monitoring environments where radon may be present

The AlphaS uses Bertin’s advanced pulse ionisation chamber technology, providing the necessary sensitivity, stability, and reliability needed to comply with pertinent regulations such as IRR17 and Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HSWA). It can be used in all areas where radon may present a risk, including:

  • Workplaces where radon exceeds 300 Bq/m3, which may include construction, mining, and excavation works.
  • Residences as determined by the Housing Act 2004 and Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS).
  • Waterworks, including treatment plants and underground reservoirs.

Supported by a UK-based calibration service

The new AlphaS is supported by Southern Scientific’s radon calibration service,  so you can have confidence that radon levels are within legal limits. Using certified and rigorous testing methods, all calibrations are conducted in a carefully controlled environmental radon chamber at our UK facility. This priority service reduces downtime and maximises availability for users with only a single active radon monitor.
