The BioThreat Alert® Range for the detection of biological threats
The BioThreat Alert® range from Tetracore allows fast, convenient and reliable detection of biological threats by using a combination of the BioThreat Alert® Lateral Flow Assay (LFA) strips and the BioThreat Alert® Readers.
The strips are by far the leader in first responder field identification of samples for biothreat agents and are used by HazMat teams, law enforcement, federal, state and local governments, and by corporate customers. Notably, the BioThreat Alert® strips have been utilized by DOD, DOE, FDA, EPA and USDA. The strips are currently used by over 900 HazMat and Emergency Response Teams as well as 200 corporate entities in the United States and 40 other countries. The test strips are very easy to use and are similar to over-the-counter home pregnancy tests.
Singleplex LFA Strips (Kits)
The Singleplex BioThreat Alert® strips allow fast analysis of liquid samples containing specified biological agents, with results in up to 15 minutes. The strips use lateral flow assay (LFA) technology, giving a high level of sensitivity and accuracy whilst also being highly portable, simple to use and cost-effective. Designed by experts in the field of biological warfare agent detection, the BioThreat Alert® strips are suitable for use by both first responders in the field and by scientists in the lab.
The Singleplex strips come in kits of 25 strips (with a collection kit for 5 samples) and are available for the following biological agents:
- Abrin
- Anthrax
- Botulinum Toxin A&B
- Brucella
- Orthopox (the family of Smallpox)
- Plague
- Ricin
- SEB (Staphylococcal Enterotoxin B)
- Tularemia
Proficiency strip kits are also available which can be used to demonstrate the operating procedure of the BioThreat Alert® test, for training purposes.
As with any screening device, all results must be confirmed by a certified laboratory.
Multiplex LFA Strips
To test for multiple biological threats with one Lateral Flow Assay (LFA) strip, Tetracore provide the Multiplex BioThreat Alert® strips. Like the Singleplex strips, the Multiplex strips are sensitive, accurate and simple to use. Within 20 minutes, the strips can confirm whether specified Bacteria or Toxin threats are present within the sample under analysis.
The Multiplex strips come in packs of 10 strips and are available as the following variants, testing for the listed biological agents:
- Toxin: Ricin, Abrin, SEB (Staphylococcal Enterotoxin B) and Botulinum Toxin A&B
- Bacteria: B. anthracis (Anthrax), Y. pestis (Plague), F. tularenis (Tularemia) and Burkholderia (Psuedomallei & mallei)
As with any screening device, all results must be confirmed by a certified laboratory.
BioThreat Alert® Reader TX
To conveniently read, interpret, record and report the presence of a biothreat from the Singleplex BioThreat Alert® strips, Tetracore provide the BioThreat Alert® Reader TX. The tablet-based OCR reader is simple to use and uses green light to effectively read the red lines of the BioThreat Alert® strips, reducing the chances of false negative results. Use of the reader gives traceability, allows the user to maintain chain of custody and create exportable pdf reports, essential in investigations.
When a strip is ready to be read it is placed in the drawer and imaged. The image is displayed on the screen while processing is taking place, seconds later a result of ‘Positive’, ‘Negative’, or ‘Invalid Test’ will be displayed and automatically recorded with the time and date. Operator name and comments can be added to the reports.
A reader capable of analyzing both the Singleplex and Multiplex BioThreat Alert® strips is also available, the BioThreat Alert® Reader TX Flex. The TX Flex is also a tablet-based OCR reader but houses a different-shaped drawer, allowing the user to read both the Singleplex and Multiplex strips with one device.
Features of the TX and TX Flex Readers:
- Capable of storing data on thousands of readings
- Obtains results in less than 60 seconds
- Android 5.1 Operating system, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capable
- Up to 30 hours of battery life
- Handheld, weighing 660 g, with dimension of 15 cm x 23 cm x 5 cm
- Includes rugged carrying case
C2T Sample Preparation Swab
Tetracore’s C2T Sample Preparation Swab is an all-in-one sampling system which is ideal for use by first responders with the BioThreat Alert® strips.
The simple to use pen-style system houses a removable swab, a buffer solution in an ampoule within the pen and a re-sealable pipette end, allowing the user to easily dispense the liquid sample whilst also being able to dispose of the potentially contaminated sample in a controlled manner.
Once a sample has been prepared with the C2T swab, it is suitable to use simultaneously with the BioThreat Alert® strips and the T-COR 8™ Multiplex assay cartridges.
Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) kits
Tetracore also provide ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays) kits to test for a range of biological agents. Suitable for lab-based analysis, the ELISA kits offer an accurate, sensitive and efficient technique for the testing of biological threats in environmental samples.
Tetracore provide the ELISA kits in the Plus/Minus (+/-) format, utilizing a positive row of capture antibody above a negative row of normal, same species antibody. The lower result can be subtracted from the top result to produce an adjusted result. It is the preferred method for complex sample matrices.
Advantages of using ELISA kits:
- Better sensitivity than BioThreat Alert Strips.
- ELISA format is friendly to samples from complex matrices: Food, Surface swipes, Unknown powders, Air collected samples, Air filters.
- Optional 'Positive/Negative' capture format reduces matrix effects.
- Kits are available either pre-coated with capture antibody or non-coated to allow for user flexibility.
ELISA kits for the following biothreats are available:
- Abrin
- B. anthracis (Anthrax)
- B. globigii
- Botulinum Toxin A, A&B, B, C, E and F
- Brucella
- Burkholderia
- F. Tularensis (Tularemia)
- MS2 Bacteriophage
- Ricin
- Staphylococcal Enterotoxin A, B and C (SEA, SEB and SEC)
- Vibrio cholerae 01, Vibrio cholerae 0139
- Y. pestis (Plague)
Not for diagnostic use of clinical samples.
