Detect radioactive contamination x3 faster in treatment rooms

At a glance

> The M3D RAVIN CAM is a new portable radiation imaging survey meter.

> In a study, it was found to be x3 faster in detecting contamination compared to traditional Geiger counters and ion chambers.

> Importantly, the RAVIN CAM also detected residual contamination which a GM counter missed.

Visualising sources contamination in real time

The RAVIN CAM is a new meter for contamination monitoring in nuclear medicine and imaging departments. What makes it stand apart from conventional methods is the radiation heat map, which the meter overlays on an optical image or live video, allowing sources of contamination to be visualised. This provides a faster and more accurate alternative to Geiger counters and pressurised ion chambers for detecting, locating, and identifying contamination caused by sources of ionising radiation such as 99mTc, 177Lu, and 131I.

Identifying sources of 177Lu and 131I used in therapies

In a study by the University of Michigan, both the RAVIN CAM and a conventional GM counter were used to search for hidden radioactive sources in hot labs, as well as treatment rooms and adjacent bathrooms where 177Lu and 131I MIBG therapies were administered. The study measured the time it took both instruments to detect contamination and compared technical capabilities in locating and identifying isotopes, as well as effectiveness in post-treatment clean-ups.

Detecting residual contamination missed by GM counters

It was found that the RAVIN CAM detected contamination in just 48 seconds, almost three times faster than the GM counter. It also identified the isotope and more importantly, detected residual contamination missed by the GM counter. By being faster and more accurate, the RAVIN CAM allows staff to effectively comply with regulations, as well as safeguard patients and themselves against unnecessary exposure. Click here to access the poster published by the University of Michigan.
