Improved raman spectroscopy with Rigaku CQL’s 2.0 software update

The new release improves user experience to facilitate quicker response times when identifying chemical substances

Rigaku has announced the release of its new evolved software for the Progeny ResQ CQL, the first handheld 1064nm field raman spectrometer on the market. The CQL’s 2.0 software update features a cleaner user interface with simplified options and a dark background with high-contrast fonts and colours for use in all lighting conditions to enhance safety. Redundant features have been removed to deliver a streamlined workflow and device configuration is reduced for faster on-site use.

Improved Graphical User Interface (GUI)

The CQL’s new GUI includes larger, simplified touchscreen buttons for easier navigation, especially when wearing gloves. A clear, consistent layout between pages improves navigation and allows quick access to the device’s most commonly used features.

New features and functionality

The CQL now includes pre-configured setting selections based on application;

  • General
  • Explosives
  • Narcotics
  • CWA
  • Hazmat
  • Customs

It also allows two additional User-Defined applications to be created, configured, and stored by the user by setting scan delay, timeout, laser power, and libraries to search.

Chemwatch Safety Data Sheets (SDS) have been integrated into the software, giving users critical information about scanned materials immediately on screen, including recommended PPE, reactivity synonyms, transportation, and handling.

Clear rapid results

Key information is presented on the results screen allowing faster user response, including;

  • the material identified and its corresponding Correlation Coefficient
  • CAS number, which when clicked will display Chemwatch SDS information
  • scan file name, which when clicked will display the spectrum screen
  • NFPA hazard diamond
  • GHS hazard symbols

Improved identification performance

Improved data capture has been achieved through better handling and removal of ambient light by using higher SNR thresholds for both regular and library scans. The new software also introduces a better-performing algorithm that greatly improves the True Positive Rate (TPR) and lowers the False Negative Rate (FNR).

A new automated mixture analysis allows the CQL to identify up to five components in a compound and new compounds have been added to the library, including narcotics and Chemical Warfare Agents such as Novichok A-234 with materials logically recategorised into Chemical Groups.
