STFC have their Radhound portable radiation monitor modified to meet requirements

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) recently had their Radhound portable radiation monitor software customized to meet the requirements of their research.

The Radhound is a multi-purpose digital radiation monitor suitable for all of your contamination monitoring and radiation protection requirements.

Alex Clemlinson, Electrical Design Engineer at STFC, said: “I work at the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source, a world-leading center for research in the physical and life sciences at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory near Oxford in the United Kingdom.

We have used the radiation monitors on our interlocked systems, which gives a signal to the personnel protection system to say whether or not there is radiation present.

I contacted Southern Scientific who came in to discuss our monitors and to get a better understanding of the software customization we were after, as the modifications were not typical. We appreciated them coming in to see us as it can be hard to explain over email.

We shipped off all our existing devices, while we received quotes and invoices which was relatively straightforward.

Following the modifications, the Radhounds were sent back to us and we tested the monitors on arrival. There were no problems with the customized Radhounds.

The Radhounds are currently installed on four different instruments. They are easy enough to set up and change radiation levels. For each instrument, the settings and menus are simple and easy to use.

I would recommend Southern Scientific to a friend or colleague.”
