Measuring Tritium with the Marc 7000 Tritium sampler from SDEC

The Marc 7000 Tritium sampler from SDEC uses a series of four bottles, a cooling system and a catalytic furnace to collect both tritium vapour (HTO) and gaseous tritium (HT) or organically bound tritium (OBT).

After filtering the aerosols of the gaseous effluent, the air passes through the first two bottles containing appropriate trapping solution in order to collect tritiated water, vapour or gaseous 14CO2 , Then it passes in an oven in which the elementary form of tritium HT or non-CO2- gases are oxidized to water vapour HTO or gaseous 14CO2 in the presence of a catalyst and oxygen. The oxidized compounds are trapped in a second series two buttles containing the same trapping solution.

Commonly two trapping units are used, one for trapping tritium and one for trapping carbon-14. The most used trapping solutions are respectively water and a sodium hydroxide solution.
